Pennies for Peace Drive April 11 – 22, 2011

Pennies for Peace Results
Thank you, Sarah Smith, for all your efforts in April to raise pennies for Pennies for Peace. It is a great cause and the money will go very far in providing education to many people. In total, our community raised $621.29. Below is the breakdown of what we provided:
1 penny = a pencil; 2-3 pennies = an eraser; 15 pennies = one notebook; $20 = one child’s school supplies for one year; $50 = one treadle sewing machine and supplies; $100 = maternal healthcare supplies for one year; $300 = one advanced student’s annual scholarship; $600 = one teacher’s annual salary

Thanks to Dr. Hamilton’s help, we got all the pennies counted. Our class winners are listed below even though every class is a winner for participating! Every classroom will receive a book for their classroom library. The classes listed below will receive an extra book with a peace theme.
K – Mr. Kraus, 1st – Mrs. Wade, 2nd – Mr. Monroe, 3rd – Ms. Young, 4th – Mr. Blackwell, 5th – Ms. Payne

Books will be distributed next week to all classrooms. Thank you again for all your help in this initiative with all SRT-4 PYP schools!—Jason Johnston, PYP coordinator

Sarah Smith students joined tens of thousands of students in Atlanta and around the world who participated in the Pennies for Peace program and who worked together to become members of a global family dedicated to peace. The children collected change in their classrooms.
Pennies for Peace, a program of Central Asia Institute (CAI), founded by Greg Mortenson – author of the #1 New York Times best seller, Three Cups of Tea. 1,000 Cranes by Sarah Smith

Our initiative for Japan
In Japan, it is commonly said that folding 1,000 paper origami cranes makes a person’s wish come true. The creation of a senbazuru is about much more than the folding of 1,000 origami cranes. It’s about the planning, the process, and the people involved. The end product is actually the journey itself. The making show Japan what they mean to us and the love that we hold. And more than that, we’re showing that we have faith in them. We’re dedicating our hands and our hours in humble imitation of the dedication that we hope to convey, for years to come, to the recipient of the cranes. We are saying, “Japan, we cannot possibly feel what you feel, but if we could, we absolutely would.”

Last May, Sarah Smith as a school “visited” Japan during our International Travelers Week. We were introduced their culture with the unbelievable generosity from the Japanese community here in Atlanta.  In honor of this generosity, we would like to have the entire Sarah Smith Community contribute the making of 1,000 Cranes for Japan:

1. Each student at Sarah Smith will be given a square of origami paper. They can personalize their paper by signing their name, writing a message to the Japanese people, or drawing a picture.
2. Please return all personalized squares from both campuses to Jason Johnston no later than Friday, April 1st.
3. All students at the Intermediate Campus are invited to fold the cranes before school starts from 7:30 - 8:00 each day the week of April 18th in Ms. Hage’s room.
4. The cranes will be strung together and sent to one of the most devastated areas of Japan. One of our Sarah Smith parents, Caitlin Russell, is serving as a liaison between our school and a teacher in that area.
5. If students would like to make additional cranes at home to send to Japan, here are instructions: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YSTjk8ElGhQ. Please send the cranes in with the wings flat. There will be collection boxes at each campus.

Thank you all for helping us send our friends in Japan our good wishes.
