A part of the A Plus Education Reform Act of 2000 includes the creation of local school councils. The intent of this law is to bring communities and schools closer together in a spirit of cooperation to solve educational challenges, improve academic achievement, provide support for teachers and administrators, and bring parents into the school-based decision making process.
The purposes of the local school council include:
The school council consists of seven members, with the majority considered a quorum. Two parents (or guardians) of students enrolled at Sarah Smith, two teachers, two representatives from the business community, and the school principal make up the council. Members serve a two-year term, with staggered elections of one parent representative, one teacher representative, and one business representative annually.
Four to six meetings will be held each year at the school.
